There’s something special about the word “and.” It’s one of my favorites, and it packs quite a punch in an incredibly modest package.
No where is “and” on more prominent display than with the arts AND business councils we find in many of our greatest cities. The Arts & Business Council of New York was the first one I discovered, and it is because of their Business Volunteers for the Arts program that my career tilted more towards the arts at all. In recent years, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the team at the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, and the work they do to educate working artists on all conceivable topics (legal matters, finance, trends and techniques, self-publishing) is inspiring.
My first contribution to their webinar library is now live. It’s called “Arts & Numbers: Budgeting for the Creative Class” and it is a quick 15-minute summary of all things budgeting for artists.
And did I mention it’s free? That’s always good for budgeting.
Arts AND business AND budgeting AND free? The most powerful word in that phrase is “and,” and it loses nothing through repetition. In fact, the repetition may even add something.

Introduction
Hi and welcome to “Arts & Numbers: Budgeting for the Creative Class.” This webinar is sponsored by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, and in it, we’ll cover strategies for combating the four major financial challenges artists and creative entrepreneurs face every day.
In no particular order, the four challenges are:
- Managing the professional treadmill;
- Budgeting;
- Combating cash shortages; and
- Finding creative fulfillment through professional goals.
My clients, students, and creative colleagues face these challenges all the time, and I’m excited to share strategies and tips for combating them with you today.
Listen to the rest of the webinar via the Arts & Business Council’s webinar library. Enjoy!
