THIS MONTH’S MONEY MESSAGE: SAVOR
Well, we’ve made it. I can’t believe the end of 2023 is upon us. And also: Finally. What a year it has been.
As I turn the final pages of my 2023 planner, I can’t help but look back and reflect on the year. 2023 has been a big one. One to appreciate. One to savor.
I am also overdue for an audit of my time: Where did it go? Did I do work I value? Did I show up when it mattered? Did I show up for myself? Are there things I’d rather not do in 2024? You’ll find me taking the time to honestly answer these questions this month.
I hope you are able to find the time to ponder those questions as well, especially if you have felt overwhelmed, pulled in too many directions, or reacting rather than directing.
We kicked off 2023 by planning and gathering. In the spring, we focused on reflecting and renewing. Over the summer, I asked you to reconnect and forecast. And we’ve spent the last few months emphasizing savings, retirement, and investment. Among those themes, there have been dozens of workshops and hundreds of one-on-one sessions. We’ve worked together, counted together, cried together, learned together, and grown together. It’s been a wonderful year with you all. Thank you.
As 2023 comes to a close, I hope you find moments to savor. And if you can’t find them, I hope you create them.
Here are some things to know, do, and believe along the way.
Know: What you love to savor.
Is it quality time spent with family and friends? Is it a solo afternoon at a coffee shop with a warm drink and a good book? Is it the magical flow that envelops your creative world when things are going well? Is it supporting your community and showing up for those who matter to you? Prioritize what you savor, in your life and in your budget.
Do: Take a moment. Take a breath. Savor it.
Your presence is a present in the present. Take the moment. Wiggle your toes. Notice what is around you. Be present. Take a breath. And maybe another one. Savor this moment, just for you.
Believe: Moments worth savoring exist.
In her poem Leaves and Blossoms Along the Way, Mary Oliver wrote, “Beauty can both shout and whisper, and still it explains nothing. The point is, you’re you, and that’s for keeps.” Your time is worth savoring. Your work is worth savoring. Your self is worth savoring. I believe in you.
WHAT WE’RE DOING
I’m traveling to New Orleans this month to connect with the artists participating in the Joan Mitchell Center Residencies. I get to lead a financial workshop and offer some one-on-one financial support as these artists navigate their next steps.
To close out the year, I’ll be having one final retirement conversation with alumni from the New England Conservatory of Music, and over the next few weeks, there are 24 final coaching sessions booked on my calendar.

As the year comes to a close, we’re chatting about year-end planning, 2024 goals, and even some last-minute retirement planning. The rest of this month is already booked, but if you’re aiming for a refresh in 2024, now is a good time to claim your time.
